Consulting created real pagers for numerous customers to create the perception of a legitimate company in order to get picked up for the contract to produce the pagers for Hezbollah.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pagers manufactured for Hezbollah were separate from those made for other clients, the report said. Quarterly projections released Wednesday showed a narrow majority of officials penciled in cuts that would lower rates by at least a quarter-point each at meetings in November and December.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/i\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\u003c/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThey\u0026#8217;re going to start cutting, and they want a hard cut. The problem with a hard cut is that, first, inflation has not gone down all the way to the 2% number the Federal Reserve typically looks for, and, second, the economy is still pretty hot, meaning that unemployment numbers are still not radically up.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eSo what are they doing? They\u0026#8217;re injecting more money into an economy that actually is not flagging enough to justify that size of a cut. The case for a 25-basis point cut could be made. You could say we need to gradually inject more money into the economy.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eBut interest rates should be free-flowing and not manipulated by the Federal Reserve at all. It\u0026#8217;s ridiculous that we have a centralized government agency that decides how much your dollar is worth based on a dual mission of reducing unemployment and keeping inflation down. The free market should decide exactly how interest rates float, and sometimes the interest rates need to go up in order to clean out bubbles.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eWhen that doesn\u0026#8217;t happen, bubbles end up growing, and then eventually, the bubbles burst.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe Journal continues:\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe Fed governor Michelle Bowman dissented against Wednesday’s decision in favor of a smaller, quarter-point cut. Bowman, who was appointed to the board by Donald Trump in 2018, became the first governor to dissent against an interest-rate decision since 2005. It was the first dissent by any voter on the rate-setting committee since June 2022.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/i\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe Fed rate cut marks just the sixth time in the past 30 years that the central bank switched from raising to lowering rates. Usually when the Fed starts cutting rates, it doesn’t know whether it will make a handful of small moves—as it did in 1995 and 1998, when the economy avoided a downturn—or whether it is the start of a longer series of reductions, as in 2001 and 2007, when the central bank cut rates a few months before the economy entered recession.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/i\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\u003c/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eSo, they\u0026#8217;re going to start lowering the interest rates again. There are a few reasons for this. One is the United States government is borrowing money at such an unbelievable clip right now that to leave those interest rates up would ratchet up the interest payments on the national debt. In order to correct for the vast national debt we are piling up, they\u0026#8217;re lowering the interest rates so we don\u0026#8217;t have to pay people back at as high rates. That is why the stock market is currently riding precisely where it is. Just days ago, the price-to-earnings ratio (which assesses whether a stock is over- or under-valued\u003c/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e) \u003c/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003efor the Dow Jones Industrial Average was riding at 31. The average PE ratio for the Dow over the past three years is 20.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThat\u0026#8217;s insane. That means stocks are overvalued. That means there\u0026#8217;s quite a lot of money in the system that is being thrown at the stock market because people don\u0026#8217;t know what to do with the money. Investors are getting a fresh infusion of cash in their pocket, and they\u0026#8217;re immediately planting it where they think it will possibly earn a return. Stocks would be one place. They\u0026#8217;re presumably going to do the same in real estate.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe problem is that the interest rates in real estate remain higher than they were five or six years ago. Just two days after that parody was posted on X, Newsom \u003c/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https://x.com/GavinNewsom/status/1817768956754788440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eresponded\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/a\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e with a threat: \u0026#8220;Manipulating a voice in an \u0026#8216;ad\u0026#8217; like this one should be illegal. I’ll be signing a bill in a matter of weeks to make sure it is.\u0026#8221;\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eRight off the bat, even if you put aside all the specific debate about the law, that\u0026#8217;s a pretty incredible turnaround time. When was the last time a politician saw something on social media that he didn\u0026#8217;t like, and promised to outlaw it within a \u0026#8220;matter of weeks\u0026#8221;? California is so corrupt and slow-moving that they can\u0026#8217;t even pass legislation to fix their \u0026#8220;high-speed rail\u0026#8221; project, which is tens of billions of dollars over budget because it\u0026#8217;s stalled for about a decade. But when it comes to memes that offend Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and California Democrats can move very quickly. When they\u0026#8217;re personally threatened or offended in some way, politicians spring into action. The other day, CNN ran a whole story about how often Kamala Harris\u0026#8217; team posts \u0026#8220;deceptive\u0026#8221; content all over the Internet.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ca href=\"https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/14/politics/fact-check-harris-campaign-social-media/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eHere\u0026#8217;s\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/a\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e the headline: \u0026#8220;Fact check: Harris campaign social media account has repeatedly deceived with misleading edits and captions.\u0026#8221; \u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eAnd of course, Kamala Harris herself has lied about what Donald Trump said about the Charlottesville protests, and the \u0026#8220;\u003ca href=\"https://www.dailywire.com/news/cnn-gop-er-gets-anchor-to-admit-kamala-is-lying-about-trump-bloodbath-comments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003ebloodbath\u003c/a\u003e\u0026#8221; in the auto industry, and so on.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eSo why exactly is it legal for Kamala Harris and her campaign to be \u0026#8220;deceptive\u0026#8221; on social media, while at the same time, it\u0026#8217;s now illegal to create a \u0026#8220;deceptive\u0026#8221; deepfake? How are overt lies protected by the First Amendment, while only AI \u0026#8220;deepfakes\u0026#8221; are illegal? And more to the point, who actually gets to decide whether a deepfake is \u0026#8220;deceptive\u0026#8221; or not? Especially when politics are involved, it\u0026#8217;s very difficult to get people to agree that anything is \u0026#8220;deceptive.\u0026#8221; For example, you could easily make the argument that the Kamala parody ad isn\u0026#8217;t \u0026#8220;deceptive.\u0026#8221; It\u0026#8217;s labeled parody, for one thing. For another, it\u0026#8217;s a pretty accurate summary of Kamala Harris. And yet Gavin Newsom said he\u0026#8217;d make it illegal because, in his view, it\u0026#8217;s \u0026#8220;deceptive.\u0026#8221;\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe other two laws that Newsom signed this week, concerning AI and elections, have the same problem. As The New York Times \u003c/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/17/technology/california-deepfakes-law-social-media-newsom.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ereports\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/a\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e:\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u0026#8220;The [second law] will go into effect in January, and requires labels to appear on deceptive audio, video or images in political advertisements when they are generated with help from A.I. tools. The third law, known as the \u0026#8216;Defending Democracy from Deepfake Deception Act,\u0026#8217; will go into effect in January and require social media platforms and other websites with more than 1 million users in California to label or remove A.I. deepfakes within 72 hours after receiving a complaint.
